In one of our earliest posts, FOE explained that Pacific Northwoods Resources Ltd had applied for and had been granted Managed Forest status (see: PNR Ltd ? Earle Creek, These lands are now a ?Managed Forest?). We also mentioned that with the re-organization of the forestry sector by the provincial Liberal government a new regulatory body was coming into existence to assess, audit and oversee this Managed Forest Programme. This body, the Private Managed Forest Land Council became fully established by September, 2004 with the appointment of Mr. Trevor Swan as Council Chair in late August.
The Council has a website that explains who they are and what they do:
http://www.pmflc.ca
It also explains what benefits private landowners gain by having managed forest status and what their obligations are under the programme. What is important to bear in mind is that it is this Council which administers the forest practices component of the Managed Forest Programme. In other words, if you think there is something amiss with a private landowners logging and that owner has a managed forest licence you complain to this Council. No doubt with an operating budget of only $350,000 per year, the only time the Council puts its feet on the ground is when a member of the public complains.
So, if you want to know what Pacific Northwoods Resources gains by having Managed Forest status and what its obligations are, particularly its environmental obligations, visit the website. It?s a quick read.
